About Me

maryMary Pride is the publisher of Practical Homeschooling magazine and the founder (with Bill) of the world’s most-visited homeschool web site, Homeschool World. In 1986 her book, The Big Book of Home Learning, was the first-ever mass-market book about homeschooling. It won both the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association gold medal and the Silver Angel award. Subsequent editions came out regularly through 2004, when the rise of the Internet made it possible for homeschoolers to locate curriculum resources with relative ease. To this day, many new how-to-homeschool books use Mary’s approach to breaking down homeschooling via learning styles, teaching styles, curriculum styles, and family goals.

Mary is also the author of a number of books on topics of interest to Christian women, as well as four children’s books. A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, she has two degrees in engineering.

Mary and her husband, Bill, are the parents of nine totally homeschooled children. All have graduated from homeschool and at this point all have earned at least one college degree.

I first started reading your newsletters in 1987 (or 1988), on the recommendation of my cousin, who told me about this new thing”, homeschooling! I was a young mom missionary in Japan then—lots of experience since those early days, as I homeschooled my five from kindergarten until they each went back to Indiana for college. You were the mentor and friend I needed all those years. I’m wanting to reconnect now, as I’m helping homeschool my grandkids. Also, I have an adult daughter now interested in teaching online, and was wondering if there is a good list of reputable Christian online schools where she could find opportunities to make application.

Well, this is embarrassing! Sally, my daughter just threw up this site, with two sample pages, in anticipation of me having some time to blog, which so far hasn’t happened. That’s why I haven’t been checking the comments, and it has taken me 2 years to respond!

      Thanks for trying to reconnect.

I don’t personally know of a list of reputable Christian online schools looking for teachers, but…

For actual responses, and a good place to ask your questions (I can repost them to our 350,000 page fans, who collectively know more than me!), PM our Practical Homeschooling page on Facebook, at https://www.facebook.com/PracticalHomeschooling.

      Thanks!

Millicent, I haven’t been checking comments here (obviously, since this is months after you asked for help – my apologies)!

This is just my “I hope to start blogging someday when/if I get the time” placeholder site.

I homeschooled my kids in the 80’s and 90’s. I used all of your books available at the time. One of the products you suggested was KidsArt. I loved it for our art curriculum but haven’t been able to find it recently. I am teaching art to a homeschooled boy and would like to use it again. Could you please help me with contact information for it?
Also, I would like to subscribe to your magazine. However, for some reason I was unable to navigate your website. Could you please suggest a solution? Thank you, Terri F.
